The five boroughs of New York City are some of the best places on Earth to live. In Manhattan, you can easily grab a pizza slice at 2am. In Queens, you can live that semi-suburban family life. In Staten Island, you can drive your car everywhere and get delicious take out.
One thing that isn’t ample in the boroughs, is apartment storage space. What little that’s available is often scooped up by other tenants, so how can you create more space within your apartment? There are a few ways, and they’re all better than paying thousands a month when moving in NYC.
Add Furniture To Your Bathroom
Your bathroom is already small, we know. Building shelves up, such as over the toilet and along the side of your vanity, will help you save major space. Extra towels, shower curtains, sheets and other linens can all be stored here, making it so you don’t have to seek out expensive storage for stuff you can actually use frequently.
Bathroom shelves can also store additional cleaning supplies or organize and move your toiletries up off of the sink so you stop knocking them over. It really is incredible what the addition of a few shelves can do.
Hideaway Storage
Possibly the one and only must have of apartment storage, you need totes and collapsible containers that will make your moving and storage situation much easier. Anything that can be folded, such as off season clothes and extra blankets, should be placed into totes and stored under the bed.
Add resistance rods to your closets to store additional coats, clothing and shoes. Fabric bins that can collapse into each other are wonderful for holiday decorations, and take up much less room than a big bulky tote. When it’s time to decorate for Christmas, your empty tote won’t be taking up any much needed room.
Hang As Much As You Can
This applies to the kitchen more than anything. Counter space tends to be limited, so install spice racks on the inside of your cupboards. Hang pots and pans, oven mitts and serving/mixing utensils. Add some shelves as well. If it can go on the wall, then your best bet is to put it there!
There are dozens of tips out there than can help you with your lack of storage. Fear of organization shouldn’t ever stop you from moving in NYC, or to NYC for that matter.
