So you’re thinking about moving to NYC? Sounds like a great idea. Nothing is more exciting than living in “the city that never sleeps”. So let’s assume your mind is already made up. You’ve already got a place to live and a job lined up, and you got Simply Moving transporting your stuff. In a city like New York, the question you’re probably asking is: Do I have to bring my car? The short answer is you don’t need to. If you want, that’s totally fine. But it can be difficult to navigate the Big Apple in a car.
NYC is home to a wide array of public transportation options that can take you to anywhere in the City. Here are a few transportation options that are available to you:
1. Taxi
Nothing can be more iconic than the countless numbers of Yellow Taxis that ride the highways and byways of New York City. Since there are so many of them, you can simply just hail a cab and be on the go before you know it.
2. Uber/Lyft
OK, so maybe taxis aren’t more to your liking. No problem. Today, nothing can be more convenient than ordering an Uber or Lyft with just a few touches on the screen. Another thing to bear in mind is that the rates may differ than normal. Pay close attention to whether or not “surge pricing” is in effect so the extra charges don’t surprise you.
3. The Subway
New York would not be…well, New York without it’s subway. It is one of the most used metro systems in the United States. Best of all, it is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Perfect if you’re having a late night out with friends. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a station closing down. Even better when you don’t have to shell out a lot for a cab ride from Manhattan to Queens.
4. The Bus
The Manhattan Transit Authority (MTA) offers bus services across the city with over 235 routes, plus express routes. Like the subway, the MTA bus is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. If you’re looking to use the bus as a way to commute, be sure to know which bus is closest to your neighborhood. You should also look through the route schedule and see how often it runs (i.e. Every 15 minutes, 20 minutes, etc.)
Like the subway, bus fares are a more affordable option if you can’t afford a taxi or Uber fare.
5. You
Yes. You. No matter where you live, you could be within walking distance of some of your favorite places. Not to mention, you are your best transportation option for when you need to get to your nearest bus or subway stop.
Conclusion
If you are moving to New York City, you’re better off without your car. But if you can’t seem to separate yourself from it, we understand.
